![]() ![]() Interact with the ancient dragon's corpse to acquire an Ancient Dragon Soul. You will be taken to an arid wasteland resembling the dragon battleground described in the original Dark Souls. Interact with it to enter the Dragon Memory. After obtaining the Ashen Mist Heart, travel to the Duke's Dear Freja arena, and a new crystal will appear under the hollowed dragon. However, there is also a secret place to use the Ashen Mist Heart. You must fight the Giant Lord by entering one of these memories to proceed. You can use the key on hollowed giants in the Forest Of Fallen Giants. The Ashen Mist Heart allows you to travel into the dark memories of the past. ![]() Towards the end of the game, you will have to travel to the Dragon Shrine to obtain the Ashen Mist Heart from the Ancient Dragon. If you have also defeated King Vendrick and obtained the King's Crown along with the three DLC crowns, it will be upgraded to a new version, named the "True King's Crown". While equipped, death no longer results in a hollow, and you cannot be cursed. If all three have been obtained, each of the crowns will be given a new effect after a short cutscene. Talk to King Vendrick, and for each DLC crown obtained, there will be a specific dialog. Interact with King Vendrick's armor in the chamber at the end of the Undead Crypt to enter the Memory Of The King. Reach the Ancient Dragon, and obtain the Ashen Mist Heart. Uncover the hollowed King Vendrick in the Undead Crypt, get the King's Ring, and enter Aldia's Keep. Open the gates at the Shrine Of Winter, and enter Drangleic Castle. Then, enter the Memory Of The King, using the following steps. Obtain the "Crown Of The Sunken King", "Crown Of The Old Iron King", and "Crown Of The Ivory King" from their respective DLCs. Blocking all of their attacks with low Stamina or a weak shield is inadvisable, and they are an excellent foe to learn dodge timing against.Vendrick's Blessing and True King's Crown Ravenous Crystal Lizards move quickly and can close distance rapidly with lunging and sweeping attacks that cover a lot of ground. Learning its tells can be tricky at first-if you don’t mind dying a few times, it is well worth it to engage this foe and let it attack you at close range and a distance-it is good training for learning to read non-humanoid attacks, a very useful skill that will come in handy. Ravenous Crystal Lizards have a fairly nasty arsenal of attacks, and they are your first real encounter with a non-humanoid foe. They are the larger, angrier version of Crystal Lizards who simply flee when encountered. Unlike most enemies, Ravenous Crystal Lizards do not respawn after they are slain. ![]() Scales (and only Scales) are used to upgrade specific special weapons. These rare foes are apparently an evolved form of Crystal Lizards, and the only ready source of Titanite Scales in the game until much later on, when you can buy them from the Shrine Handmaid, or loot them from Rock Lizards in Archdragon Peak. Don’t be like me, treat them with respect. I’ve suffered an embarrassing number of deaths to dog packs across the various Souls games over the years. Love the real ones, but not these undead beasts. You really don’t want these dogs ambushing you in unfavorable terrain (or worse still, with other foes nearby). When encountered later in the game in packs, if at all possible, try to pull them (or kill them!) from a distance with ranged attacks. If you can make them come at you while you’re on elevated terrain, it restricts their movements, and they’re a lot easier to handle. If you do get rushed, dodge roll away repeatedly and get some distance. Starved Hound attacks don’t have a lot of punch individually, so if you can keep them at bay by blocking with a shield, they’re fairly easy to dispatch-just watch your flanks and don’t let them surround you. They are often encountered in packs later in the game, and it is very easy to get overwhelmed and killed if you stumble into a group of them. ![]() They are lethally fast, and can quickly flank you and break your guard. These undead have been carefully placed as an early game tutorial lesson in basic combat against humanoids, use the opportunity to practice if you are new to the game! Starved Houndĭon’t underestimate these emaciated undead hounds. Keep a sturdy shield between you and their attacks, or dodge when they charge and go for a fatal backstab to finish them quickly. Roused from their stupor, they can lash out and deal heavy damage if you let them past your guard. These sad souls are pitiable, but do not mistake their often passive demeanor as reason to treat them carelessly. Most wander aimlessly, some stand idly in place. The most basic humanoid foes in the game, these poor souls are other cursed undead who have lost all of their humanity.
